CHRISTMAS WORKSHOP AT SWISS COTTAGE LIBRARY
“This is my best day at the library”
– Alex (aged 7)
On 20 December 2011, Global Ocean in connection with Transition Primrose Hill hosted a Christmas themed eco-arts plastic workshop at Swiss Cottage Library.
Children were introduced to the issue of plastic pollution with a talk from Global Ocean staff members, Melanie and Amy, about how plastic gets into the ocean and how this can impact marine life and ultimately human health. The children were quick to learn the three R’s and understand the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling plastic.
Arts educator, Anna, and her assistant, Lily, then worked with the children to create marine-inspired Christmas decorations using an array of plastic bags, bottles, bubble wrap, fishing line, packaging and containers.
The library was a buzz and quickly became filled with beautiful marine decorations including fish, dolphins, turtles, crabs and even a swordfish! At the end of the day the decorations were taken home by the children to hang on their Christmas trees.
The children had a wonderful time and learnt a lot about the issue:
“It’s a good idea to reuse plastic” – Dea (aged 6)
“We are making models of marine life because people are throwing rubbish in the water and the animals get tangled up and they are eating it and then they get sick” – Zana (aged 8) and Rona (aged 8)
“This is my best day at the library” – Alex (aged 7)
“If you don’t throw your rubbish away properly it goes into the oceans and kills animals that live in the ocean” – Rrona (aged 6)
Global Ocean would like to say a big thank you to all the children, parents and library staff for such an amazing day. Special thanks goes to Saul for making the day possible.
