Class: 5th Year A

Workshop Implementation Period: morning

Description Topics:

  • 27 students participated on this workshop. All of them are from the same class from the 5th year of the fundamental education level. The majority is between 10 and 12 years old, however 5 of these students are between 13 and 15 years old.
  • The first contact was done through the coordinator Genilda, who was very receptive to the Global Ocean Project idea.
  • No member of the school participated in the workshop.
  • Some of the school authorities have shown interest for the repetition and/or continuation of this type of initiative in the school.
  • Even though the students seemed to be interested in the workshop, the class was a little noisy and I had to do extra effort sometimes to keep the group organized and working on the proposed activities.
  • There were great workshop results in this school with beautiful and contextualized panels with good and creative conservation proposals for seas and oceans.
  • Many students have family relatives and/or friends who work directly with the seas and oceans, as fishermen, for example.
  • In the panels a few groups ended up writing messages about the seas instead of creating proposals for their conservation. This also worked to promote reflection about the theme. Among the student’s proposals for marine conservation are: “do not pollute as the fishes are also living creatures; do not pollute the beaches; preserve the sea environment; do not “produce” garbage in the seas as the aquatic animals are also important; do not fish with bombs; do not throw garbage in the beach/sea; save water; do not mistreat the sea creatures; preserve the environment; do not mistreat the sea.

Class: 4th year B

Workshop Implementation Period: afternoon

Description Topics:

  • 15 students participated on this workshop. All of them are from the same class from the 4th year of the fundamental education level. The majority are between 9 and 10 years old, being one of them 11 and another 12 years old.
  • The first contact with the school was done through the vice-director Telma and the education coordinator, Kátia. Both of them were very receptive to the Global Ocean Project idea.
  • The school has shown interest for the repetition and/or continuation of this type of initiative in the school.
  • The school teacher did not participate in the workshop.
  • The students were very interested in the workshop and were very polite, respective and attentive. They seemed very happy with the workshop.
  • The students have asked to keep the panels. Of course this request was attended. To compensate this arrangement we took pictures of the panels for the Global Ocean record.
  • Many students have family relatives and/or friends who work directly with the seas and oceans, as fishermen, for example.

Among the student’s proposals for marine conservation are: do not throw garbage in the water; preserve the environment; save the seas. Some groups also decided to write messages about the theme as the one that follows: “we shall take care of the aquatic environment. It is also important to us. It is everyone’s responsibility to take care of the aquatic environment. We should not throw trash in the seas because it pollutes.”

Class: 2nd year A

Workshop Implementation Period: morning

Description Topics:

  • 22 students participated on this workshop. All of them are from the same class from the 2nd year of the fundamental education level. The majority are between 8 and 10 years old, being two of them 7 and another 11 years old.
  • The first contact was done through the coordinator Zenaide and the secretary Sandra. Both of them were very receptive to the Global Ocean Project idea.
  • The school teacher did not participate in the workshop.
  • This was the hardest class to work with. Some students were very dispersive, not being able to maintain their attention focused. Some students also showed signs of lack of education, being disobedient and aggressive with each other. A couple of students got into a fist fight and I had to take them to the school director to deal with the situation according to the school policy and procedures to deal this type of problem. According to some conversation with some school members and also to my quick observation, it seems that the entire school has a violent culture. Probably part of the problem has deeper roots, which are beyond the school control, as the lack of domestic education and parents care and attention.
  • Some students have family relatives and/or friends who work directly with the seas and oceans, as fishermen.
  • Among the student’s proposals for marine conservation are: we should take care of the sea; we should not pollute; we should not kill the living creatures of the sea; we should take care of the water; we should not leave the water tab opened. One of the panels had written: “I love the beach” “the sea is my passion, the sea is everything for me”. Another panel brought: “the sea is beautiful, it is good for everyone, it is good for the fishes”.

Description Topics:

  • 15 students participated on this workshop. All of them are from the same class from the 5th year of the fundamental education level. The majority are between 10 and 12 years old.
  • The first contact was done through the vice coordinator Litzia, who was very receptive to the Global Ocean project idea.
  • This class was chosen by the school also because they have been working the water element during their regular classes.
  • The school has shown interest for the repetition and/or continuation of this type of initiative in the school.
  • This has shown to be a very educated class. The students have shown great interest on the subject and very good participation in all activities.
  • The teacher collaborated in the end with the voting process for the best panel. One of the students was unsatisfied with the voting results and the school teacher recalled one of the subjects they had recently discussed to deal with the issue: voting processes and democracy. Everything was fine in the end. The students seemed very happy with the workshop.
  • Some students have family relatives and/or friends who work directly with the seas and oceans, as fishermen.

Class: 4th year A

Workshop Implementation Period: morning

Description:

  • 26 students participated on this workshop. All of them are from the same class from the 4th year of the fundamental education level. The majority are between 9 and 10 years old
  • The first contact was done through Walter, one of the school collaborators, engaged with the school coordination. He was very receptive to the Global Ocean project idea, as well as the other school members.
  • This school already develops art works made of recycled material.
  • The school has shown interest for the repetition and/or continuation of this type of initiative in the school.
  • The school teacher and some other collaborators were present during the workshop, along with the students. The teacher was very collaborative with the workshop activities.
  • The students were very polite and well educated. They have shown great interest and attention for the workshop themes and they participated actively in all activities. They seemed very happy with the workshop.
  • This class was chosen by the school also because its students have been working with the sea theme. Independent of the Global Ocean project, they were supposed to make panels related to the ocean. Previously they had been constructing some little fishes made of recycled material. In the Global Ocean panel construction activity they incorporated these little fishes giving 3rd dimension to the students work.
  • Because of a little delay of the students coming to the classroom and because of all the questions and comments brought up by the interested students, we were a little short on time for the workshop implementation. As they needed to make an ocean panel for the school anyway, the students wanted to improve their final panel work and we had no extra time for this, the teacher and I agreed that they would keep the panels, so the school teacher could continue their construction in another moment, integrating the school actions and the Global Ocean activities.
  • The panels created on this workshop were very creative and beautiful. The students did write some conservation proposals, however these were not recorded
  • Many students have family relatives and/or friends who work directly with the seas and oceans.

Class: 2nd year A and 3rd year A

Workshop Implementation Period: afternoon

Description Topics:

  • 25 students participated on this workshop. Because of the small size of the classes in this school, two different classes were put together for the Global Ocean workshop, one from the 2nd year and another form the 3rd year of the fundamental education level. The majority of the students are between 9 and 10 years old, however we also had a student who is 8, three who are between 11 and 12 and two students who were 13.
  • The first contact was done through Sandra, who was very receptive to the Global Ocean project idea.
  • The school teachers, from both classrooms, were present during the workshop, along with the students. They helped taking some pictures.
  • The school has shown great interest for the repetition and/or continuation of this type of initiative in the school. They acknowledge the need for this type of action, specially because many of the students come from fishermen families.
  • It was a little difficult to work with this group as the education level of the students, in most of the cases, does not correspond to their school grade. Many students did not know how to write or read, making the first written activity difficult and slow to implement. Because of this and the long time the written activity took, shortening the time for the other activities, I did not request the students for the written conservation proposals. They only did the drawings and we discussed about conservation.
  • The students were very distinct in terms of the school education level. Clearly some students were more used to the school environment than others. During the workshop some students were dispersive and were not able to keep their attention on the activities. Some of them would be distracted by little conflicts among themselves. However, many students showed great interest for the themes and activities presented, participating actively in the discussions and in the activities development.
  • A great number of students have family relatives and/or friends who work directly with the seas and oceans.
  • As it happened in all schools, the students in this workshop were very excited with the drawing activity. They created beautiful panels, but as explained previously they did not write conservation proposals.
