Melanie Salmon was educated at Gordonstoun and St Andrew's University, graduating in art history, social anthropology and law. With a life-long love of the oceans, she has worked for many of the world's leading environmental organizations. In 2006 she founded Global Ocean as a privately funded charitable foundation. She co-wrote a book about marine life titled, “Deep Water”, for UNEP, and is spending her time developing campaigns to help children inherit a healthy living ocean rich in biodiversity. She is currently looking into the possibility of preserving an abundant shark community in the UAE which, with continued fishing on this scale, will be wiped out within a decade. She is also teaching children about solutions for clean living, with a particular focus on how plastics break down in the sea and enter the human food chain.
