The new website is now up, which is super exciting… but by all means the Global Ocean office is busier than ever!
One of our current campaigns runs close to our hearts as we aspire to make our local village of Primrose Hill, London’s first plastic-bag free zone.
Monday 19th September, we are running a second film screening of ‘Message in the Waves’ for the business owners in Primrose Hill. The first screening was a huge success and hopefully this time round will be just as successful.
The film was used in Modbury, Devon to make the village the first plastic-bag free zone in the UK. We at Global Ocean wish to create a similar campaign in the fashionable and well-known Primrose Hill, to banish plastic-bags and establish an example for other villages in London to follow. Furthermore it would contribute and perhaps allow the Mayor of London’s initiative to make the city plastic-bag free, to finally gain momentum.
The public need to be made aware of the negative impact on marine life when plastics are disposed in the ocean. For more information on the dangers of plastics, please go to our campaigns page.
If Primrose Hill reduces the use of plastic bags in the area, this make a small contribution to the problem, but potentially a huge contribution to the wider message that will hopefully catalyse a movement towards banning plastic bags nationally.
Our Objective is simple:
To achieve a consensus between all shops in Primrose Hill, to reduce the use of plastic bags in the area.
Our Plan.
Thanks to the first screening, we obtained excellent input into how Primrose Hill can put a plastic-bag coalition into action. The more popular ideas put to the forum were to have:
1. Primrose Hill organic tote bag to be sold in several shops in the area.
2. Allow shops to replace plastic bags with easily recyclable paper bags.
3. Implement a pennies for plastic scheme, similar to the initiative in Belsize Park which will ask customers to pay for a second-use plastic bag if they request it.
We are confident that Primrose Hill can make this change and we will be popping into shops all week to see who is on board! Keep checking our visual petition to see which shops are joining the coalition each week!
If you are a business owner in the local area, or simply fancy coming along then please feel free to come to the screening is in the Pembroke Castle pub in Primrose Hill, Monday 19th September at 6:15pm.
